Welcome to the Cardington Alumni Association

More than 200 alumni and guests attended the 81st Cardington-Lincoln High School Alumni party held on Saturday, May 28, at the high school. All Occasion Catering, Waldo, served a grilled chicken breast dinner to 194 persons. Among the hostesses were Cardington-Lincoln High School students Emily Levings, Hunter Martin, Kortney Ramoneda, Marcie Coder, Macy Baxter, Dustin Briggs and Tearsa Fisher. Giving the table grace was Robert Henry, Class of 1961.

Conducting the meeting were Ron Pine, Class of 1956, second vice president of the executive committee and Gary Ebert, Class of 1968, first vice president. Bob Mathews, president, led the Pledge of the Al-legiance. Giving the welcome to the Class of 2011 was Joy Fisher Hall, Class of 1961 and HannahZierden, president of the Cardington-Lincoln High School Class of 2011, gave the response.

C-L District Superintendent Brian Petrie spoke to the alumni audience with his proposal to assist the students in recognizing the legacy of the school through the foundation of the Cardington-Lincoln Archive. He explained that an exhibit on the history of the school will be designed and created this summer. "We are asking our alumni to share with us their stories and history of the district through writing, pictures and artifacts that will be prominently displayed in the High School," he said He added that it is hoped the archive can officially open in time for homecoming 2011. "If you would like to be a part of the creation and design of this project or you would like to lend or donate an item to the archive and design of this project please call 419-864-3691," he advised.

The Class of 1961, represented by Henry, presented a $3,500 check to the superintendent, to be donated to the school library. The money is a gift in honor of the class’ 50th graduation anniversary. Pine welcomed the alumni and their guests and conducted a brief business meeting.

Ebert led the Hall of Fame Induction when four alumni were inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. Inducted were Evelyn Fricke Long, 1950; Charles Brown, 1956; Robert Henry, 1961 and Robert Ullom, 1973. Brown, who is deceased, was represented by his wife, Elaine. Ullom, also deceased, was repre- sented by his father, Chester James Ullom.

Ron Pine presented a $1,000 scholarship from the association to C-LHS senior Taylor Brown, who will be attending Hiram College to study animal science. The Class of 1961 was recognized individually by class member Jim Pine. Each was given a special gift created by Joanne Fricke Mathews, Class of 1952.

Ebert noted those who graduated 70 years and more. They were Raymond Fiant, Class of 1934;Virginia Kehrwecker Seif, 1936; Ullom, Class of 1939 and from the 70 year class, Evelyn Cook Brooker, Daryl McClenathan and Cecil Maxwell. Each was given a gift of stationery engraved with pen and ink drawings of Cardington scenes made by Joanne Mathews.

A memorial service was conducted by Marilyn Hert Spires- Pierotti, Class of 1952, assisted by Dianne Davis Carwell, Class of 1968 and accompanied by Carol Ackerman Wahl, 1967.Remembered, each with a white carnation, were the following alumni who passed away in the past year: Dr. Paul Wolber, Class of 1932; GaNell Maxwell Durfey and Ruth Reed Longworth, Class of 1935; Marie Prosser Dodds, 1938; Phyllis Kreis Haycook, 1940; Genevieve Smiley Miley, 1941; Crystal Aileen Hollis Seif, 1942; Maxine Kelley Hartsough and Barbara Anderson Roach, 1946; William Burke, 1947; Reba Shoewalter Rogers , Phyllis Yake Phillips and Howard Gattshall, 1949; Betty Bowers Clayton, Carolyn Patterson, Beverly Stockdale and Gerald Ault, 1951; Dixie Piatt Gibson and Evelyn Foust Arnold, 1954; Pat Fiant Brake, 1959; Jane Showalter Watts, 1960; Mary Akron Long, 1961; Wayne Ostrom, 1962; Ted Disterdick, 1965; Janet Maxwell Wuertz,1966; Arlan Jackson, Mary Douce Duryea and Vela Osborne Bingman Hunter, 1968; David Martin, 1969; Donald Bingman, 1970; Justin Williamson-Stratton, 2008 and Jamie Musser, 2009.

Kenneth Heimlich, Class of 1949, led the singing of the school song, accompanied by Wahl. Classes meeting separately before the dinner were 1951, 1956, 1949 and 1961. Alumni and guests danced and listened to the music of the Palace Theater Big Band in the cafeteria. Vernon Heimlich, Class of 1952, is a long time member of the band.

Special thanks were given to the registration committee, Shirley Fowble Robinson, and Jackie MasonWinchell, 1953, and Twila Rentschler Gardner and Audrey Fowble Newbury, 1954

The afternoon hostess was Angela Boyd Dendinger, 1983, who also helped the executive committee, and Kevin (1975) and Cindy Gliem Long(1977) and the custodians with the set up. Bob Mathews, donated the snacks and punch and the flowers were from All Occasion Florist ( Sandra Willey Spiegel, 1959) Linda Ruehrmund, 1962, took reservations and also updated the directory. Hostesses at the dance were Dendinger, Diana Kirkpatrick McClure, Dawn Kirkpatrick Ruehrmund and Veronica Price Pearl (1991).

Pam Frysinger and her staff made the programs. Paige Clark, 2012, operated the sound equipment. Officers for 2011-2012 are Ebert, president; Pine, first vice president; Mathews, second vice president;Carwell, secretary and Long, treasurer.

The 82nd party will be held May 26, 2012.

2010 Cardington-Lincoln High School Alumni Hall of Fame Inductees

Earl Sage

Bob Mathews

Earl Sage, Class of 1944, a World War II veteran of the U. S. Navy, was serving when his class graduated. He had earned his high school credits before he entered the service and was awarded his diploma later. He earned his Bachelor and PhD degrees from The Ohio State University and through a fellowship from RCA, he was awarded an MBA from Harvard University. Sage’s employment included HPM, Northern Consolidated, the Radio Corporation of America and the Defense Management Center (DMC) at OSU which was given special recognition and commendation by the Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara resulting in an Air Force Unit Commendation at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. From 1973 to 1996, he served on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, teaching in the College of Business Administration. He was director of Management Development Programs from 1973-76 and authored many business related publication. Dr. Sage became an Associate Professor Emeritus at UNC-Charlotte when he retired in 1996. He and his wife, Dorotha, reside in Greensboro. Bob Mathews, Class of 1952, a lifelong Cardington resident, has been a businessman in the community for most of his life. As a youngster, he had a newspaper route, mowed lawns, operated the snack stand at the ball field and sold airplane kits and model car parts from a small hobby shop in his home. He began working in the Sinclair Filling Station when he was a senior in high school, working until he was drafted into the U. S. Army in 1956. Following his discharge, he purchased the station and although it has changed gasoline companies several times, it has been the Mathews Service Station since 1959. He purchased the Bowes Automotive Parts Distributorship in 1981 and remains active with both ventures. He has also been active in his community, serving on the Morrow County Hospital Board for 31 years, with the Cardington Rotary Club since 1965 and has been member of the C-LHS alumni association’s executive committee for five years. Bob and his wife, Joanne, reside in Cardington.

Mills Poorman

Dr. David Ebert

Mills Poorman, Class of 1955, currently serving as the mayor of Cardington for the second time in his life, graduated from Ashland College in 1961. He was a teacher at his high school alma mater for over 30 years, served as one of the school’s bus drivers for 36 years and was athletic director for 12 years. He coached baseball, football and basketball and served on the Central District Athletic Board for five years. He was elected to the Ohio School Administrator’s Association Hall of Fame in 1997. Mills was the village mayor from 1976-78, was on village council, the Cardington Library Board, the Republican Central Committee and is active with the First United Methodist Church. He and his wife, Carolyn, reside in Cardington. Dr. David Ebert, Class of 1972, graduated from The Ohio State University in 1977 with a combined BS and MS degree. He attended the John Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1977-81 His internship and residency were completed at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago in 1984. Dr. Ebert served in the U. S. Army Reserve Medical Corps for 13 years and attained the rank of major. He was on the faculty of the University of Illinois College of Medicine from 1990 to 1998. Dr. Ebert is currently at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago and is nationally recognized for his work with the deaf. He is medical director fo Deaf Access and has been published in many medical journals and resides in Oak Park, Illinois.
